Expert to Know: Kelwin Fernandes

What was your first entrepreneurial moment as a kid or teen?

Selling homework to classmates. What started with helping a few friends quickly escalated into a full-blown operation across the school. Ethically questionable? Definitely. But looking back, it was probably my first taste of monetizing knowledge. Maybe even my first version of a consulting agency.

What’s a belief you’ve changed your mind about in the last 3 years?

That time is your most precious asset. I used to think I had to be involved in everything. But over the last few years, I’ve realized that the real unlock is stepping out of the daily grind. Delegate everything you can, starting with the simplest tasks, either to people or to technology. Your focus should be on irreversible and long term decisions.

What’s a day in your life really look like (no filters)?

Playing with the kids in the morning. Same breakfast every day, same clothes. I walk to work listening to an audiobook or podcast. Start the day with a team sync. Mornings are for deep work on long-term goals. Lunch with my partner — in life and in business. Afternoons are for more deep work, usually focused on marketing or sales. I wrap up by supporting the team, then head home and play with the kids again.

What’s a personal ritual or habit you credit for your success?

I standardize and delegate everything I can. Same clothes. Same breakfast. Walk to work. Fewer decisions, more focus. That habit shows up in both my personal life and my business. Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to AI. To me, it’s about offloading low-value decisions so you can focus where it truly matters.

What’s one mistake you made early on that taught you something lasting?

Relying too heavily on a few big clients. In the beginning, I focused all my energy on delivering top-quality work to a small number of clients. But that made the business fragile. What I learned is that consistent outreach is just as important. The more conversations you have, the faster you learn, the more resilient your business becomes, and -ironically- the better your service gets.

What do you do to recharge outside of work?

Being with my family. They are my why.

What makes your agency different from others in your space?

We don’t chase hype. We chase impact. As an AI company, it would be easy to ride the wave and promise the moon. We don’t. We give honest feedback, even if that means saying a project isn’t worth doing. What we offer instead is a clearer, more predictable roadmap to long-term optimization and real business value.

How do you foster creative thinking on your team?

Our entire methodology is rooted in design thinking. We build tools that help our team question assumptions, challenge their own ideas, and explore better solutions. Creativity is not a side activity. It is built into how we approach every project and how we make decisions.

What trend in marketing/advertising do you think is overhyped?

AI content automation. I believe in brand authenticity. AI can support the process, but the core message should come from you. People connect with real voices, not just optimized outputs.

What’s a trend you’re betting on long-term?

In operations, I’m betting on automation to drive consistency and scale where it really matters. In marketing, I believe content is still king. Show up, share how you think, help others solve real problems. It compounds over time, and when it does, it becomes unstoppable.

What’s one small decision that led to a big result for your agency?

I stepped out of project delivery after my first child was born. I wanted more time with my family, and project deadlines didn’t fit that goal. When my second child was born, I focused on scaling marketing and sales. That shift helped us grow much faster. I guess I need a third kid.

What advice would you give to someone starting an agency today?

Focus on distribution, not product. You can build the best service in the world, but if no one hears about it, it won’t matter. And delegate early. Start with the simple tasks. Free your time to think, sell, and build what only you can.

How do you approach pricing — any rules you live by?

I stopped pricing by the hour and started focusing on value. With AI in the picture, hourly pricing is quickly becoming obsolete. Start thinking in terms of outcomes and performance-based models. That will soon become the norm.

What’s one resource (book, podcast, etc.) that changed how you work?

Book: The E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber. It changed how I see the role of a founder. It taught me to stop working in the business and start working on it. That mindset shift led me to systematize, delegate, and build something that can scale without depending on me every step of the way.

What’s your favorite thing about being in this industry?

Working in AI consulting gives me a front-row seat to every industry. I get to learn how different sectors operate, spot emerging trends, and study best practices across the board. That perspective helps me identify patterns and design solutions that are not just innovative, but transferable and scalable.
